My Gourmet Journey | Discovering Food

I grew up in a small country town on the Darling Downs in Queensland, where fresh, local produce was simply a part of life.

Most of our meals were home-cooked using ingredients grown in our garden, gathered from neighbours, or sourced from local producers. Fast food was a rare treat, usually saved for the annual show or family holidays.

One of my earliest memories is slipping on my little yellow gum boots, grabbing my blue milking bucket, and “helping” Dad milk our cow. His bucket was much bigger than mine, and I probably wasn’t that helpful but getting that warm, fresh milk back to the kitchen is still one of my fondest memories.

A Love for Cooking (and Eating)

My mum and nana were both incredible cooks, and I spent a lot of time in the kitchen with them. Helping, learning, and most importantly, tasting. We had chickens for eggs and meat, a veggie garden, fruit trees, and some of the best beef and potatoes around.

Looking back, I now realize how lucky I was to grow up with such an abundance of real, fresh food.

As I got older, my love of cooking only grew. I studied at the College of Tourism and Hospitality, where I also developed an appreciation for wine and discovered drinks and dishes from around the world. That passion carried into my career in events, hospitality, and tourism. These industries let me stay close to food, drink, and travel.

Losing and Finding My Food Mojo

Like many of us, I went through a phase where long hours and shift work led to less-than-ideal eating habits. I stopped cooking as much however my food knowledge and appreciation grew.

These days, working for myself in digital marketing, gives me the flexibility to work whenever and from anywhere and build a life filled with flavour and travel.

So with a lifestyle change and more control over my time, I found my way back to the kitchen and to the things I love most: cooking, eating, and exploring new places.

These days I focus on good, fresh ingredients and eating “without numbers.” I’m more intentional with what I eat, not just out of need, but out of want.

Why I Travel for Taste

As a self-proclaimed foodie and avid planner, I’m always researching local food, wine, and specialty experiences, whether it’s for a big trip abroad or a weekend getaway close to home.

I don’t just want to visit a place. I want to savour it.

From tasting regional wines and local dishes to unearthing hidden producers, I believe food is the most authentic way to connect with a culture. I spend hours researching before a trip so I can find those hidden gems others might miss.

Sometimes, the best discoveries happen on the ground. But I love having a head start and helping others do the same.
